Can you still recall the dusty old photo albums from your parents? The sticky foil albums with photos that get faded over the years. But you probably don’t care about the fade. What you care about is what’s in the photos, tight?
You probably can’t find a photo with your mum brushing your hair or your dad tickling you while you roll on the floor laughing.
We certainly lack this kind of photos in our house. We used to have the 24 frames (or 32 if you were really cool) so you waited until everyone looked smilingly into the camera to take the shot. Nothing wrong with that. We do get to remember how we looked like then and I’m still giggling over my mum’s palm-like ponytail 🙂 But what’s lacking is the honest moments of our lives.
And that’s the magic of lifestyle photography!
I consider lifestyle photography to be something that lives between documentary and studio photography. The previously mentioned family album can be considered as a kind of amateur studio photography. With studio photography, it’s usually about the photographer directing how and where we stand and look, makes some corrections and snap! Takes a photo. Documentary photography is the total opposite. That’s when the photographer is merely an observer.
Lifestyle photography is all about looking for moments that would happen in reality (even if the photographer wasn’t there) and evoking feelings that are honest and unstaged. In a controlled environment. During my lifestyle family photosessions, I place my subjects to get the most beautiful light. Sometimes I give cues to interact sometimes I don’t. My role here is to interact only to get real reactions that will tell the story which is as close to real life as possible.
What do lifestyle photographers do?
- Take photos of real moments with minimal interference. They understand that some people need more guidance than others and adjusts his process accordingly.
- Suggests activities and lets the magic of true feelings take over.
- Help the family pick the most photogenic clothes and accessories, but in regards to what the family already owns and what will have a special meaning after years.
- Help pick the photo shoot location. No matter the location, they always try to find the best places and the best light to help the family shine!
What lifestye photographers don’t do?
- Place the subjects into stiff poses.
- Don’t ask them to smile or how they should turn their head or arms.
My style of lifestyle photography is a mix of staged and authentic moments. No matter if the photo shoot takes place at home or on location, I’m always seeking for the best light and direct the family just enough for them to feel relaxed and natural. If possible, I snap some documentary shots as well as some with everyone looking at me 🙂
